ISSSresearch is invited to expose the research “Sarigöl. An Istanbul Gecekondu at the Center of an Urban Crises”, which is part of the STADTSCHAUM | URBAN FOAM research project at the Venice Architecture Biennale “Common Ground”, directed by David Chipperfield, from 29th of August till 25th of November 2012.
“Sarigöl. An Istanbul Gecekondu at the Center of an Urban Crises” deals with a specific Gecekondu neighborhood called Sarigöl in the municipality of Gaziosmanpasa in Istanbul. This informal settlement is a self-built neighborhood, and its population has to deal with the consequences of an upcoming Urban Transformation Project today. The research of ISSSresearch tries to show the impact which this Urban Transformation Project will have on the life of the inhabitants of Sarigöl. This research was also part of the exhibition “Hands-on Urbanism. 1850 – 2012” curated by Elke Krasny in the AZW – Architecture Center in Vienna earlier this year in Austria.
Pictures from the research “Sarigöl- An Istanbul Gecekondu at the Center of an Urban Crises”, which is part of the STADTSCHAUM | URBAN FOAM research project, are published as part of the exhibition “Hands-on Urbanism 1850 – 2012″ (curated by Elke Krasny), in the catalogue of the Architecture Biennale 2012 “Common Ground” directed and edited by David Chipperfield, Marsilio, Venice, 2012. The URBAN FOAM research project in general is dealing with the question of the role of informal aspects in cities, including informal practices as well as spaces, for their sustainable urban development in the specific urban contexts of Istanbul, Berlin and Mumbai. All three of these cities were matter of an intense in-situ research, including Expert Interviews as well as Urban Explorations. In this project, ISSSresearch understands the informal practices and spaces as part of an permanently ongoing process of the production of urban space, inspired by the writings of Henri Lefèbvre. The results of the URBAN FOAM research project will be presented in the correspondent exhibition, curated and designed by ISSSresearch, in November 2012 in Berlin.
